Community Builds Handicap Ramp
May is National Remodeling Month and also Lyme Disease Awareness Month. In partnership with Amy’s Angels, the Home Builders and Remodelers Association of Central Connecticut has made a local family’s home handicap-accessible for their wheelchair-bound son.
Two years ago, 10-year-old Troy Murphy suddenly contracted Lyme Disease and a series of other tick-borne infections. The debilitating disease has left him bed-bound and tube fed, but 13-year-old Troy is getting better and finally able to go outside again.
Although this is great news, it has been very difficult to get Troy in and out of the house. We have come together with the local community in Farmington to build a ramp for the Murphy home.
“It takes two of us to get him in the wheelchair and about four of us to get the wheelchair out onto the porch and outside, which is really difficult,” says Alison Murphy, Troy’s mom. “[The ramp] opens up a whole new world of possibilities for him. He’s so excited to get outside!”
After six hours of hard work, Troy is now able to enjoy the spring weather ahead. We hope to see him up and walking very soon!
